Here are my DYI recipes for personal products. Once I realized how negatively the toxicity in my everyday products were affecting my health, I knew I had to find a better way. These recipes are so easy and really work. I am also going to include the pros and cons of each one from my own experience.  The containers I use are all made out of cobalt or amber colored glass. The dark glass is optimal because it doesn't let in the sunlight which saves the integrity of the essential oils, and plastic can allow toxins to seep into the products.
Using these products have really changed my life and my approach to personal care. I have improved my skin, teeth and general wellbeing. These products have made it possible to further detoxify my life and daily routine.

Teeth Cleaning

Mouthwash
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup of hydrogen peroxide
  • 2 tablespoons of baking soda
  • 5 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 5 drops wintergreen essential oil (optional, not if pregnant or breastfeeding)
  • 3 drops lemon essential oil
Mix these ingredients and put them in a glass bottle (preferably cobalt or amber http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0071S48NY) and shake before using.
Pros: Works really well to deodorize and clean your mouth
Cons: Baking Soda can leave white calcification on bottle
Toothpaste
  • 2  tablespoons coconut oil (mixes best if liquid, above 75 degrees F)
  • 2 tablespoons baking soda
  • 5 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 5 drops lemon essential oil
  • 5 drops wintergreen essential oil (optional, not if pregnant or breastfeeding)
Mix these ingredients with a spoon until they form a paste and there is no lumps of coconut oil left.  I put mine in a container like this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00N29NUTY
Pros: Works really well to deodorize and clean your mouth, non-toxic
Cons: Can either be liquid or solid at room temperature (changes at 75 degrees), acquired taste
Whitening Toothpaste
  • 2  tablespoons coconut oil (mixes best if liquid, above 75 degrees F)
  • 2 tablespoons baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon turmeric powder (counter-intuitive, but it works!)
  • 5 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 7 drops lemon essential oil
Mix these ingredients with a spoon until they form a paste and there is no lumps of coconut oil left.
Pros: Works really well to whiten, deodorize and clean your mouth, non-toxic, turmeric is awesome for you
Cons: The yellow of the turmeric can be messy, can either be liquid or solid at room temperature (changes at 75 degrees), acquired taste
Sensitive Teeth Toothpaste
  • 2  tablespoons coconut oil (mixes best if liquid, above 75 degrees F)
  • 2 tablespoons baking soda
  • 5 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 10 drops clove essential oil
Mix these ingredients with a spoon until they form a paste and there is no lumps of coconut oil left.
Pros: Works really well to desensitize, deodorize and clean your mouth, non-toxic
Cons: Can either be liquid or solid at room temperature (changes at 75 degrees), acquired taste
Quick Tooth Whitener
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 5 drops lemon essential oil
  • squeeze of lemon juice
Mix the baking soda and turmeric and then your toothbrush ready. Squeeze the lemon juice and immediately stick your toothbrush in the mixture (it will bubble) brush it onto your teeth and let it sit for a few minutes. Brush it off with warm water. Important to note that lemon juice can be harsh on your tooth enamel, so I don't do this one more often than a couple times a month. Also, this is not something that would keep well for more than one application. So just mix up a fresh batch in a bowl whenever you want to use it.
Pros: Works really well to eliminate surface stains, non-toxic
Cons: Lemon juice can be harsh on enamel, so don't want to do it too often
Swollen Gum Treatment
  • 1 part turmeric powder
  • 1 part coconut oil
Mix these ingredients with a spoon until they form a paste and there is no lumps of coconut oil left. Apply paste onto gums using toothbrush or finger. This works wonders on swollen gums because the turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory. Believe it or not, this will also whiten your teeth, so don't be scared to get it on your teeth! I put mine in a container like this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00N29NUTY
Pros: Works really well!!
Cons: Turmeric can be messy

Body

Spray Deoderant
  • 2 cups of water
  • 2 tablespoons of baking soda
  • 10 drops lavender essential oil
  • 10 drops grapefruit essential oil
  • 5 drops Melaleuca essential oil (tea tree)
Mix these ingredients and put them in a glass spray bottle (preferably cobalt or amber), something like this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0170J9TRS You can use different essential oils if you like different scents such as rose or sweet orange for ladies or cedar or eucalyptus for men.
Pros: Works really well to deodorize, non-toxic
Cons: Can leave a white calcification around the bottle from the baking soda
All Over Soap for the Whole Family
I cheat a little when it comes to soap/body wash. I have never made my own, and if I ever do, I will update this section! My favorite solution is Dr. Bronners Soap Concentrate (I prefer the Lavender sensitive skin option, especially for children). (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000HK1ON0)
It can be used for many different purposes, including laundry and house cleaning.  This soap concentrate is made with essential oils, organic ingredients and a lot of love.
For Body wash, I dilute it down with water and keep refilling it in a container like this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B019EFR9TQ.
Pros: Works great, non-toxic and conscious brand
Cons: You have to buy it, the original scent (peppermint) can cause sensitive areas to tingle
